# Schema markup (structured data)

> Schema markup is machine-readable code on a web page that states what the content actually is — a product, an FAQ, a company, a guide or a price. Search and answer engines use it to understand the page and to decide which pages get cited in AI answers.

It is usually written as JSON-LD in the page head and follows the schema.org vocabulary. Common types are Organization, FAQPage, HowTo, Article, Product, BreadcrumbList and DefinedTerm.

Without structured data the engine has to guess what the page is about from the text. With it, the relationships become explicit: who published the content, when it was updated, which questions it answers and what steps a process has. That increases the chance of being cited correctly.
